Reflection Nebula in constellation “Monoceros”
23.05.2023 – Top Pick on Astrobin
19.05.2023 – Top Pick Nomination on Astrobin
Project #9 (data by Daniel Nimmervoll)
Reflecting the light of nearby hot stars, NGC2170 is joined by other bluish reflection nebulae, a red emission region, many dark absorption nebulae, and a backdrop of colorful stars. This object is considered a massive, star-forming molecular cloud in the constellation Monoceros. The giant molecular cloud, Mon R2, is impressively close, estimated to be roughly 2.400-2.700 light-years away and was discovered in October 1784 by William Herschel. (Source: NASA / Wikipedia)

- data acquisition and (c) by Daniel Nimmervoll
- Daniel has created an awesome Youtube video, where he shows his current processing workflow (in particular for this data-set!)
- my take/publication on Daniel’s data is based on my learnings from a workshop we recently had – having a look at his live edit after my publication, I’m really happy with my progress

Calibration | BIAS / FlatsA "flat frame" is shot against a bright surface and contains vignetting and all the "bad" things (e.g. dust particles) that block/disturb your light train. The combination/stack of multiple flat frames is called a "Master Flat". More / DarkFlatsA "darkflat frame" is basically the same as a flat frame with the same exposure and camera settings, but shot in the dark. They are used to calibrate the flat frames. The combination/stack of multiple darkflat frames is called a "Master DarkFlat". More |

Software | Observatory Automation: Sequence Generator Pro Guiding(Auto-)Guiding is essential in astrophotography, as an un-guided mount/telescope will produce blurry images as the stars / the deepsky object will drift away. This is heavily dependent on the exposure time, so for long exposures you want to make sure to have a perfectly set up auto-guiding.
